and the soft hum of tree frogs
Simply Haiku, vol. 9, #1
I never get tired of listening for tree frogs. Here, in what my husband has dubbed “Lizard Holler,” the tree frogs signal the return of spring, raising their heads from sleep to lend their voice to our world in early March. The sound, tentative at first, grows in volume as the season emerges and courtship begins in earnest. By summer the frogs’ song crescendos into a fevered pitch that dies back down with frost. And returns again the following spring. A joyful–and sometimes desperate–sound, it reminds me of love . . . and life . . . and possibilities.

I’m a writer and a teacher, as well as a haiku-doodler. I live in a beautiful woodland setting, surrounded by native oak forests, that inspires me to record haiku snapshots of luna moths and our resident roadrunner, and even an occasional black bear as it hightails it across the top of my road, my mongrel dog barking at its heels as I watch with wonder.
